What our UPS repair covers
A home UPS has four parts that can let you down. The card that controls the switch to battery, the charging circuit that refills the batteries, the batteries themselves and the house wiring that carries backup power to your rooms. A fault in any of them looks the same from outside. The power goes and nothing happens.
Our technician tests all four before suggesting any part, so you are not told to buy new batteries when the real problem is a blown fuse or a loose connection. You hear the fault and the cost first.
- Changeover and output tested on battery
- Charging voltage measured
- Each battery tested under load
- Backup wiring and sockets checked
UPS faults we fix
A UPS fault usually shows up the moment the power goes. These are the problems we are called for most, and how we track them down.
No backup when the power goes
A failed changeover relay, a blown fuse or dead batteries stop the switch to backup. We test the UPS on battery and find which part is failing.
UPS beeping all the time
Continuous beeping usually means overload, low battery or a fault alarm. We read the alarm pattern and check the load connected to the UPS.
Batteries not charging
A faulty charging circuit, a loose terminal or a dead cell stops charging. We test the charging voltage and each battery.
Backup time has dropped
Old batteries lose capacity, and low water in tubular batteries makes it worse. We test the batteries and tell you if they need water, cleaning or replacement.
Burnt smell or dead UPS
A burnt MOSFET, transformer or UPS card can kill the unit. We open the UPS, test the card and repair it.
Some rooms stay dark on backup
This is usually a wiring problem in the house circuit fed by the UPS. As electricians we trace the backup wiring and fix the connections.
Batteries tested before they are replaced
Short backup time is the most common UPS complaint, and new batteries are the most common answer. Often that is right, but not always. A weak charging circuit, dirty terminals or low water in tubular batteries can make healthy batteries look dead.
We test each battery under load, check the charging voltage and clean and tighten the terminals. If the batteries really are at the end of their life, we tell you plainly. If they are not, you keep your money.
- Each battery load tested
- Charging voltage checked
- Terminals cleaned and tightened
Keep the right load on backup
A home UPS is rated in VA or watts, and every unit has a limit. Fans, lights, a router and a TV suit most home units, but heavy loads such as an iron, an electric kettle or an electric geyser should stay off the UPS.
Overload makes the UPS beep, cuts backup time and wears the batteries early. We check what is connected and advise which circuits should stay on backup.
Loads to keep off a home UPS
- Electric irons
- Electric kettles and room heaters
- Electric geysers
- Air conditioners
- Water pumps and large motors
Larger inverter systems can carry more, but every unit has a rated limit. Check the label on your UPS or ask us.
Battery care between repairs
Batteries are the part of a UPS that wears out first. A few habits keep them working longer.
Top up distilled water
Tubular batteries need distilled water topped up every few months. Never use tap water.
Keep terminals clean
White or green powder on a terminal is corrosion. Clean it off and tighten the clamp.
Give them air
Keep batteries in a ventilated place, away from the kitchen and direct sun.
Keep the load light
Draining batteries to empty again and again shortens their life.
Watch for swelling
A swollen or cracked battery case means the battery should be replaced.
Check before summer
Load shedding is often heaviest in the hot months. Test the batteries and the UPS before then.
Backup wiring done properly
A UPS is only as good as the wiring that carries its power. Because we are electricians, we check the house circuits on backup as well as the unit.
Rooms that stay dark
When some rooms lose power during load shedding, we trace the backup circuit and fix the connection.
Overloaded circuits
Heavy sockets wired onto backup cause overload alarms. We move them back to the main supply.
Safe changeover
The changeover and earth connections are checked so backup and mains never mix.
Units we repair
We work on the backup systems found in most local homes.
Home UPS units
Square wave and modified sine wave units that keep fans and lights running.
Sine wave inverters
Units with smoother output, suited to sensitive electronics and inverter appliances.
Battery banks
Tubular and dry batteries connected to the UPS, tested one by one.
Backup wiring
The house circuits fed by the UPS, from the changeover to the sockets.

UPS repair questions
Quick answers before you call. For anything else, WhatsApp us on 0333 6182150.
Why does my UPS beep during load shedding?
A few beeps when it switches to battery are normal. Continuous beeping means overload or low battery, so switch off heavy appliances and call us if it continues.
Why has my backup time dropped so much?
Old batteries, low battery water, dirty terminals or too much load on the UPS are the usual causes. We test each one before suggesting new batteries.
How do I know if my UPS battery needs replacing?
If the backup time has dropped a lot, the battery takes very long to charge or the case looks swollen, the battery is likely at the end of its life. We test it before you buy a new one.
Can my UPS run an AC or a geyser?
Not a typical home UPS. ACs, electric geysers, irons and kettles draw far more power than these units are built for and will overload them.
My UPS is dead and smells burnt. What should I do?
Switch it off at the mains, disconnect the batteries if you can do so safely, and call us. A burnt smell usually means a failed card component or transformer.
Can you repair a UPS at home?
Many faults such as fuses, wiring and battery problems are fixed at home. If the card needs workshop repair, we tell you before taking the unit.
Do you check the house wiring connected to the UPS?
Yes. Since we are electricians, we check the circuits on backup and fix loose or faulty wiring.
Are you available during evening load shedding?
Yes. Most UPS faults show up when the power goes, so we keep the line open 24 hours from Saturday to Thursday. Friday hours are 2 PM to 10 PM.
